Congressman Ron Paul of Texas enjoys a national reputation as the premier advocate for liberty in politics today.Dr. Paul is the leading spokesman in Washington for limited constitutional government, low taxes, free markets, and a return to sound monetary policies based on commodity-backed currency.
He is known among both his colleagues in Congress and his constituents for his consistent voting record in the House of Representatives: Dr. Paul never votes for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution. In the words of former Treasury Secretary William Simon, Dr. Paul is the “one exception to the Gang of 535″ on Capitol Hill.
Ron Paul is a candidate for the Republican Party nomination for President of the United States in the 2012 election.
Beginning in 2010 there was speculation among pundits and journalists regarding the prospect of Paul running for president again in 2012. When Paul's wife, Carol, was asked if he would run in 2012 her response was "If you would ask him now he would probably say 'no', but he did say...things are happening so quickly and fast in our country, if we're at a crisis period and they need someone...with the knowledge he has...then he would do it."
In February 2010, Jesse Benton, Senior VP of Campaign for Liberty, said of the prospective run: "If the decision had to be made today, it would be 'no', but he is considering it very strongly and there is a decent likelihood that he will."
Paul won the 2010 and 2011 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) presidential straw polls, gaining 31 and 30 percent of the vote respectively. In both cases Mitt Romney came in second.
On February 21, 2011, a grassroots-initiated moneybomb was organized with the aim of influencing Paul's decision to run for president in 2012. The effort raised over $700,000 in 24 hours.
In March 2011, Paul won the Tea Party Patriots Summit Straw Poll in Phoenix, Arizona.
On April 14, 2011, Paul announced the formation of a "testing-the-waters" account, and stated that he will make a decision on whether to officially enter the race no later than early May.
On April 26, 2011, Paul formally announced, in Des Moines, Iowa, the formation of an official exploratory commitee to campaign for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
