In the survey, released by the Smoke-Free Texas Coalition, 70 percent of Texas voters who responded support a ban, while 27 percent oppose it. The poll also found that support for a ban cuts across party lines, including 67 percent of Republicans, 74 percent of Democrats and 69 percent of independents.Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and champion cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong are backing the legislation to combat what they call a growing health menace from secondhand smoke."All Texans should be able to enjoy a smoke-free workplace," said Dewhurst, the presiding officer of the Senate. "Exposure to secondhand smoke unfairly puts of the health of nonsmokers at risk and creates an unhealthy work environment for everyone. Now is the time to make smoke-free workplaces a reality."Other key points in the survey:63 percent of respondents are more likely to vote for a state legislator who supports the smoke-free law.85 percent believe that secondhand smoke is a health hazard, including 61 percent who call it a serious health hazard.90 percent agree that all people should be protected from secondhand smoke in the workplace.
