Hisashi Owada, som er præsident for Den Internationale Domstol, kan i en pressemeddelelse stolt oplyse, at det internationale samfund udviser større tillid og respekt for domstolen, der behandler retssager mellem alverdens stater.
Domstolen har oplevet både en stigning i antallet af sager den bedes behandle, samt en stadig større bredde i de retsområder sagerne omhandler.
"The President added that the subject-matters of these cases had been “truly wide-ranging, extending from such classical issues as territorial and maritime delimitation and diplomatic protection, to issues of increasing relevance to the contemporary international community like human rights, the status of individuals, international humanitarian law and environmental issues."
